This photo was taken from Eagle's Nest hike point in Duikar, Hunza in Northern Pakistan while we (Danish and Shahrukh Sharif) were on a Documentary Shoot travel.Time
This photo was taken at 6:40 in the morning while we were climbing up the Eagle's Nest hike point. We had been on this hike point countless times before this photo was shot, but surprisingly we were never alone, we always had some people with us every time we went there - and this was the only time it was just us - Danish and Shahrukh, carrying our cameras, doing what we love!Lighting
The sun works really different in the Northern Areas of Pakistan as to how it works in Karachi - where we're from. When we left out hotel rooms to come up for the hike it was somewhere in the middle of daybreak - not too lit up and not too dark - just perfect for photography and videos! So while Danish was setting up the drone for a shot, this view caught Shahrukh's eye. It was the first time we had seen both these peaks so prominently in all its glory - just standing tall, with a beautiful glint of sunlight. After that, the rest is history!Equipment
This photo was shot handheld using a Nikon D5300 with an 18-55 mm lens. The settings used were: ISO 100, Shutter 10/1000, Focal Length 46 mm, Aperture f/9.Inspiration
Inspiration comes to us in many ways, sometimes it's about who we are and sometimes it's about who we want to be. But in both cases, it always has a story to tell! This shot is very special and near to our hearts, because it tells our story! We're brothers, who are five years apart, but we work together like one mind, one body - we are practically inseparable. These two peaks stood out to us because like us, they too are two separate peaks or personalities connected together - thus being inseparable! Wherever you see the Ultar Sar peak, you will most definitely see the Ladyfinger peak and vice versa. Just like that, wherever you see Danish Sharif, you will most definitely see Shahrukh Sharif and vice versa! Also, the lighting of the environment was a cherry on top for this shot. The gorgeous glint of sunlight as the day starts to break, highlights these two peaks and makes them far more prominent then the others around it. Which in turn helped us settle on this shot's name - Majestic Peaks!Editing
We believe each shot tells its own story and it requires post processing for that story to have justice when being told. Just like all our other shots, we started off with a clean color correction as a 'base' for this image. We were sure that we wanted to bring out more of the focus on these two peaks, but were just debating whether it would have more impact in color or monochrome. After trying out a few grades, we settled on a black and white option, but it still did not have that emphasis we were looking for. Danish gave the idea of adding a tint of gold and blue to the monochromatic grade to see how it would look. He was right! It did what we had been looking for this whole time! It gave the peaks a perfect golden tint and radiated subtle muted blues in the shadows and completed this image! In my camera bag
Honestly, we don't really believe in using high end gear to make art. We believe that photography can be done with any type of camera, be it a mobile phone, a DSLR, a film camera or even a simple point and shoot one. To be a good photographer you must have a good eye and be a good storyteller. With that being said, we use the following equipment: Camera bodies: Panasonic Lumix GH4, Panasonic Lumix G7, Nikon D5300, GoPro, DJI Mavic Pro, iPhone Lens: Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 II, Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7, Panasonic Lumix G 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 , Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X116 Pro DX II, Nikon NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8 AF-D. Nikon NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Tripod – Weifeng WF-6663A, Jie Yang Monopod Filters – Variable ND Filter Flash – Yongnuo YN-560 III SpeedliteFeedback
When we were starting out with photography, Shahrukh would always 'waste' his time in switching the camera to manual mode and keep fidgeting with the ISO, aperture, and shutter speed before taking any photos. By doing that, he would lose so much valuable time that he could have spent taking good photos. The ‘perfect’ setting configuration just comes along the way with experience, we believe it is not something which you can nail right off the bat. As a landscape photographer - and in general too, you have to have the 'eye' for a shot. As long as you have the eye, it does not matter if you even capture the shot with a low end smartphone, because when the shot tells its own story, that's when you know you've nailed it! When shooting landscapes, the light plays an important role and you have to work with that in coordination with what you're trying to capture. Otherwise you can take a bunch of shots of a mountain or a river, but without proper lighting, composition, etc. that gorgeous shot would just be average.
