Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Eagle's Nest in Duikar, Hunza of Northern Pakistan and this was our first time visiting this beautiful place.

Time

This shot was captured around golden hour of a cold Winter day around 4:00pm. We were not expecting the sun to go down this early in this place, because the sun works different in Northern Areas in Pakistan during Winters and on the downside, this place had no signals for WiFi or 4G, so either way we could not even track the sun.

Lighting

This lighting was a gift to us from the 'Photography Gods'. It was a super cloudy day and we were extremely lucky that during this shot, the clouds cleared up in such a perfect way and revealed the whole landscape to us, that it almost seemed magical and as if it were 'deemed to be'!

Equipment

We can't emphasize this enough, but we, Nuqtah Arts, strongly believe in storytelling and conveying our message through our photos and artworks. You only need an 'eye' to capture a moment and that moment can be captured by anything. For this shot, Danish simply used a Samsung Galaxy S8 on Pro mode and the settings are as follows: Aperture f/1.9, ISO 40, Shutter 1/822, Focal length 430/100.

Inspiration

Honestly this photo was not intentional, we had not initially planned to take this photo. We had set up our cameras to record a time-lapse of the clouds clearing over the Karakoram Mountains and were just 'taking in' all the beauty around us in the meantime. We were so mesmerized by this Eagle's Nest, and the feeling of being this high up off the ground, truly gave us a feeling of how an eagle feels. Our mind was flooded with Allama Iqbal's (Infamous Pakistani Poet) famous poetry regarding the human soul which he compared to an eagle. Suddenly Shahrukh told me that he's going to climb a rock to scout for a better view of this whole hike point to capture after our time-lapse. As soon as I (Danish) saw him up there, I could not resist thinking of Iqbal's famous words yet again: "Nahin Tera Nasheman Qasr-e-Sultani Ke Gumbad Par; Tu Shaheen Hai, Basera Kar Paharon Ki Chatanon Mein" This translates to: "You don’t have to make your nest on the dome of King’s palace; Oh Eagle, you are royal, choose to reside on the peaks of mountains.” Reflecting on this poetry, we believe that Nuqtah Arts is not meant for ordinary things, it is meant to be extraordinary and our vision looks beyond that and believes that just like an Eagle, we too are meant to get our name in the highest of limits!

Editing

Since this photo was not intentional, we didn't plan anything or look for anything in the environment around us which could cause a hindrance afterwards. This photo had our camera bags and other equipment lying around right underneath the rock that Shahrukh is standing on. He just left everything there when he climbed on top and I (Danish) did not think about taking it out of the shot because it was a spur of the moment capture. In post, we had to paint out the camera bags and other equipment that were lying underneath the rock and there were also a few people on the right side of the image who's heads were also showing - they had to be painted out as well. Regarding the color correction, we rarely (almost never) use a shot right out of the camera to display. We always try to set the mood with a specific style of color correction and then grading. We started off with a correction base and used a royal color palette (gold and purple) for the grading, keeping in mind Iqbal's poem regarding the Eagle and its royalty.

In my camera bag

Honestly, we don't really believe in using high end gear to make art. We believe that photography can be done with any type of camera, be it a mobile phone, a DSLR, a film camera or even a simple point and shoot one. To be a good photographer you must have a good eye and be a good storyteller. With that being said, we use the following equipment: Camera bodies: Panasonic Lumix GH4, Panasonic Lumix G7, Nikon D5300, GoPro, DJI Mavic Pro, iPhone Lens: Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 II, Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7, Panasonic Lumix G 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 , Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X116 Pro DX II, Nikon NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8 AF-D. Nikon NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Tripod – Weifeng WF-6663A, Jie Yang Monopod Filters – Variable ND Filter Flash – Yongnuo YN-560 III Speedlite

Feedback

In simple words, equipment does not matter! Always rely on your eye and a spark of inspiration in your hearts to capture a great shot.
