It's a pity that I can't allow this beautiful capture. It has to be posted in November for the November 2020 Collection challenge.
Please post another capture.

Behind The Lens

Location

I was lucky to spot this during a walk at Llyn Parc Mawr , a community managed stretch of woodland on the edge of Newborough Forest on the Isle of Anglesey off the North Wales Mainland in the UK.

Time

Taking Nature in the field really benefits from the perfect natural environment and light. This fungi was luckily perched on a verge which meant that the late afternoon light on a bright September day could penetrate the shady wood from the right direction to highlight and enhance the textural features of the toadstool and forest floor without adding a distracting flare of light through the trees in the background which helped to create this image into an intimate woodland landscape as well as a portrait of a fungi.

Lighting

Although Nature and Wildlife photography is most often improved by the light offered at sunrise or sunset that is not always the case with subjects that are taken in the field which cannot be removed or reached easily in their natural setting. The afternoon light streaming through the trees in the foreground was what created the interesting contrast of shadow and light between the gills of this fungi and enhanced the soft dappled colours of the curling leaves of the foreground.

Equipment

This was shot on a simple "point and shoot" camera , a Canon sx730 hs , with no other equipment involved. Although this camera may be considered basic it's 40x zoom , image stabilization, clear screen and other creative features mean that it is ideal for taking macro images with more complex composition on rough terrain when it may not be possible ,or easy for me , to set up a tripod or prepare my DSLR for a similar shot. I am a professional Land and Nature Artist and Photography has always been an intrinsic part of my work but battles with Chronic Illness (Ehler's Danlos Syndrome and Dysautonomia) mean that I often need to rely on the piece of equipment that is easiest to use and lightest to carry to achieve the creative results I want despite the physical and visual limitations I have to contend with. The Canon sx730 hs has helped expand what I can do while out in the field without the ability to carry a kit bag.

Inspiration

I was extremely fortunate to get the opportunity to take this image , although the composition was one I had been hoping to create during the Autumn season. I wanted to produce an artistic interpretation of a woodland landscape which produced the feeling of peace and intimacy with the Natural World that we all feel during a walk off the beaten track between the trees. Mushrooms and Toadstools are one of my favourite subjects to capture , their beauty is often overlooked and underrated , by using shallow depth and an extremely low POV in this macro image I hoped to exaggerate its size to give its beauty the chance to be appreciated in the way it deserves.

Editing

I prefer to do as little post processing on Macro Nature Photography as I possibly can to allow viewer to experience the same vision that I came across within the field , but to do this and still achieve an interesting composition with interesting details and colour it means I do a lot of research into environmental features and light that I can use in the location I plan to shoot in as well as preparing an idea of the type of composition I would like to produce if I'm lucky enough to come across the right elements to create it. I did not post processing or editing with this lucky find.

In my camera bag

As I noted earlier , I have Chronic Health issues that cause me physical and visual impairment that can be mild or severe from one day to the next. This doesn't just effect what work I can do but how much equipment I can carry or use to achieve it. My field bag and my outdoor equipment has to be light , easy to use and easy to carry while still giving me the chance of getting results. I often have to rely my point and shoot Canon sx730 hs , especially on long hikes in the wild because of it's versatility . I use a Nikon D3500 with the basic AF-P DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens because it's a great all rounder with an extremely light and small body making it easy to hold and control and have aan octopus tripod for shots in the field that can be set up . My bag also contains a set of light filters and macro lens attachments for closer images without the additional lens weight. My top tip is that I include a small spray bottle of water with cloth and dry soft bristle paint brush which are invaluable in helping to clean debris or dirt off a good subject without damaging them. I also have a bright led mini torch and a hair scrunchie so I can grab a stick and attach the torch at a useful angle if II want to get a subject that's in too much shadow.

Feedback

Always have a plan and some creative ideas in mind when you go out of your studio but don't focus on your plan so much that you miss that unexpected shot or unique opportunity that could be happening around you. That advice works for any photographer , be they a Nature Enthusiastic,a City Explorer or a Fashion Artist . The day I took this photograph I'd originally gone out to find red squirrels and had a very unfruitful day , this was a gift from Nature found during a stroll after I'd packed my full kit bag away. Many of the best images I have came from opportunity finally colliding with a long waited for artistic idea.
