Behind The Lens

Location

I am a student at Walla Walla University so I carry my Ricoh GR with me everyday. This is one of the maintenance buildings on campus.

Time

This is my favorite image I have taken this year. I was walking home from my last class right before sundown. It was cold and wet, but the dusk lighting made everything very blue. As soon as I looked up from the rain I stopped to take this shot, probably around 6:30PM.

Lighting

The color contrast from the sodium light and the blue from the dusk lighting really makes this shot stand out for me. I really enjoy architecture photography and one of the things they do well is using multiple light sources for a unique color palette. The rain also brings out some great texture which is something I am always on the hunt for.

Equipment

I shot this with my Ricoh GR placed on the ground.

Inspiration

When I see two different colors of lighting I am interested. This scene stopped me even though I have been by this building countless times before. Rain is another good opportunity for interesting textures and reflections. These combined when I walked by this building and I could not stop without taking a few shots. Architecture photography is something I am really drawn to so a take pictures of structures regularly.

Editing

Post process is pretty simple. Just some contrast brightness adjustments to make the colors pop and the texture stand out. I want to do enough editing to get the viewer to see how I saw the image. I want those textures to stand out and be a main part.

In my camera bag

I use my Ricoh GR just about everyday. it is a great camera that has made photography more fun for me. It has the manual controls you want, it is discrete and the one handed operation makes it fun to use.

Feedback

I look for different lighting sources together. The contrast in color can bring out color combinations that I would not normally put together like sodium lights and dusk lighting making the orange and blue for this image. Texture is another part that will stop me. It can be bark on a tree or a sidewalk or brick, texture is interesting to me. The last thing is weather. When the weather is bad pictures can be good. I go out in the rain or fog or anything else because it can make a place brand new.
