Location
I live across the street from Walla Walla University so I walk over frequently and take pictures of the architecture and fellow students and what ever else I can find.Time
I really love the challenge of shooting at night. I just received this camera earlier that day and I did not have a chance to shoot with it till it was dark. I went out at night with a new camera with no tripod which is one my favorite challenges as well. Taking pictures at night is like entering another world. Everything you thought was too plain could be new and fresh.Lighting
You have to change your frame of mind when you are shooting at night. I try to be aware of what type of light source I have and how bright it is compared to other sources. The world around becomes a whole new landscape of light and texture at night.Equipment
Ricoh GR I, Fixed 28mm equivalent, f2.8, 1/2 sec, ISO 800, No Tripod as I placed my camera on the ground.Inspiration
I love Architecture photography and urban landscapes. This picture was taken at the end of the summer so the parking lots had just been resurfaced and new lines painted. There were no cars in them either at that point. When I was taking in the symmetry of the building I looked down at the center line of the lot and it became what I played with eventually placing my camera on the line itself. I love how the freshly resurfaced parking lot almost looks like the ocean.Editing
For B&W pictures there is always post processing. First I used the in camera RAW converter to change it to B&W. The in Photoshop I took out some stray light from the street on the left. Overall not a whole lot of processing to be honest. In my camera bag
My Ricoh GR is what I carry everyday. This is the first capable high end compact I have owned and I am having so much fun with it. My other favorite is my Canon 5D Mark II with my Tamron 17-35mm 2.8-4 lens. I also have a Lytro for macro work.Feedback
I like unique challenges like take night photography with no tripod only finding places to put your camera on or against. I ask myself frequently what am I seeing here that I like. With night photography keep your eye out for different types of light coming together or making textures or shadows that would not be there during the day. Keep making adjustments till you get something great. Most of all enjoy shooting it will keep you coming back.
