Location
This picture was taken in a friend's backyard in Chicago.Time
I took this picture around 6pm.Lighting
This picture was taken using natural light from the sun. Our golden hour in Chicago changes depending on the season. When I took this picture, this would have been right around the golden hour.Equipment
I used my only camera (Nikon Coolpix B500) for this picture. I had it set to sports/action mode, because I was capturing shots of Luna catching the ball in the yard. She was getting tuckered out and gave me this big smile, so I got down on one knee and clicked.Inspiration
Luna's smile was the inspiration. This happened quickly and I was very happy that I was fast enough to freeze the moment.Editing
I didn't do too much editing. I cropped the image, adjusted the light and contrast to make her colors pop, and bumped up the clarity to give more detail and texture. In my camera bag
I don't keep much in my bag, just my camera, a lens cloth, and extra batteries.Feedback
When shooting animals, make sure to have your camera set at a high enough shutter speed. They're unpredictable and move quickly. If you don't have a super fancy camera, action or sports mode will normally be sufficient. In most of my BTLs, I always suggest walking around and taking your time finding the right angle. With a picture like this, I suggest the opposite. Try to have your camera settings set and ready for anything. Let the animal do their own thing, don't take your eye off of them, and just be ready to be quick with your capture button.
