This photo was taken in the Ravenswood neighborhood in Chicago, IL in the US. This building is actually right next to my work. This is the back of a bike shop and I believe there are a few apartments above the bike shop.Time
This was taken between 1pm and 2pm. I was working and I only had a few minutes to take this shot. I didn't want to wait until after work, because it would have been too dark.Lighting
Chicago is pretty gray all winter, but I believe there was a little more than usual sunlight on this particular day.Equipment
I took this with my phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy s9. I knew I wanted this photo to be in black and white, so I put the filter on before I took the picture. I took this from pretty far back just standing.Inspiration
Most of the time, I am drawn to lines when I shoot and this was one of those times for sure. This is also a pretty accurate depiction of Chicago in the colder months. A lot of buildings have this brick and wood balconies with bars on the windows and ridiculous icicles growing all over. I love capturing what is very familiar to me, but may seem different and unusual to others who live in different areas.Editing
I had already added the black and white filter before I took the picture, so I didn't adjust the lighting and contrasts during editing. I did crop this, because there were some parked cars that I felt were taking away from all of the lines. I also transformed this a little. I have a tendency to hold my phone uneven while taking photos, so I adjusted the horizontal slightly. In my camera bag
I haven't used a camera bag for very long yet. The only things that I try to always have in there are my Nikon Coolpix b500 (my only camra), extra batteries and a lens cloth.Feedback
My suggestion for similar shots is to really take your time. Take more than one to be safe. No matter what you're shooting, think hard about what you're trying to accomplish. With a photo like this, where there isn't any foot traffic or cars driving in your shot, take the time to walk around and consider the best light and angle. There are some imperfections in this shot that I can live with, but I wish I would have taken a little more time, because that moment is gone now.
