Location
This was taken on the Washington side of the Columbia Gorge which is a waterfall that was first discovered by kayakers.Time
It was taken before the sun rises to high in the sky, usually before 9:00 in the morning.Lighting
Early morning light as the sun lightens up the sky is the best. In my experience shooting water early is the best way to prevent glare. Plus if you are there as the light is getting brighter you can taken advantage of that as it suits. If it's late day you only have the disappearing light into darkness. Or know the area where you are shooting.Equipment
This was taken with what I have had in my bag the last 5 years, which is my Sony7r2 and my Canon 11-24 lens on my Gitzo tripod and RRS ball head. No filters were used as I have learned to shoot without in the last few years. If I want an ultra long exposure I will use a 5 or 10 stop Wonderpana filter. The only other lens I usually carry is my Canon 24-105 lens and of course the Metabones adapter.Inspiration
I have been to this location many times. This is one viewpoint that is more demanding to get to, so it was the comp that inspired me.Editing
The water is really this blue from the cold mountain waters so very little alterations were made in the colors except to do a little dark/white separation to help things to stand out in that regard. I also did some color dodging/burning in the trees to also help in color separation using various luminosity masks. All of this is from 2 images. One is taken for the water flow and one for the foliage and then hand blended together. In my camera bag
As stated above. That is about all I carry. Probably 80% of my shooting is done with my 11-24mm Canon lens. It is a fantastic lens that shows minimal distortion until you get in tighter quarters and have it wide open. The only other lens I own is the 17-40mm Canon lens and Canon's 100-400 telephoto which I rarely use.Feedback
As with any location in todays social media world get there early. It is not a trailed site but it has been discovered and there is only one place to get this shot from. And as with any waterfall the best clue is go early. You don't want glare on the water unless you get a dappled light which can add some depth.
