Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the clients home in Hanwell Surrey.

Time

The time of day was mid afternoon around 3.00pm.

Lighting

Natural lighting was used with light coming from the facing window. I did not not want to use any other lighting and wanted to create a natural shot with the emphasis on the Mother and her baby.

Equipment

This was shot on a Fuji XT1 with 18mm-55mm lens, f4, 1/160 at ISO 800. It was taken hand held without flash.

Inspiration

I wanted to convey the special bond between a Mother and her baby. As I was taking various shots the Mother leaned forward with her nose just resting on her babies nose, she was not directed or told to do this. I took the shot and once captured I knew I had taken a very special image between Mother and baby.

Editing

The original image was color and I thought the image would work a lot better in black and white and I did this in Lightroom. Slight adjustments were made to highlights and shadows with a slight increase in contrast. A tight crop was finally made to enhance composition.

In my camera bag

I normally carry my Fuji XT1 with 18mm-55mm lens and a 50mm-230mm lens. I also have a Godox TT350 flash with an extra set of batteries and a spare SD card. I also travel with a velbon tripod in the car at all times.

Feedback

To produce a similar shot without flash you will need a fast lens, one than can open up at around f2.0. This will let in more available natural lighting. Be careful at a lower f number as you will have a shallow depth of field meaning your focus point needs to be exactly where you want it to be which is normally on the eyes. If the lens is focused on the tip of the nose then the eyes may well be out of focus. Better still use a tripod and switch the camera to manual focus and manually focus on the eyes.
