Location
This was taken in my home studio in St. Petersburg, Russia. It is a 12 sqm room with a very light grey walls, except one which has been recently painted black. It's amazing what you can do in such a small space with affordable speedlights and a few modifiers.Time
We met in the afternoon with my favourite makeup artist Nelly Tsymbal and model Maria Braun. The preparation step took surprisingly little time, about 2 hours. Then the makeup artist and my wife Ksenia wrapped the veil around the model, fixing it with pins. The shoot went very smoothly, we managed to make two different looks, the other one being with black veil and darker eye makeup. The model did a great job posing and conveying the needed emotions.Lighting
When it comes to lighting, I love keeping it as simple as possible. Here I have only used a 80x120cm softbox illuminating the model from camera right and a second speedlight placed behind the model to create the bright spot on the background.Equipment
This was shot using a Panasonic GX8 with a Lumix 25mm lens @5.6. The off-camera flashes I have used are both Godox TT600, triggered by the X1T trigger.Inspiration
Much of the inspiration for my shoots comes from my wife. We passed by a shop selling veil for relatively low prices and she wanted to buy some meters for a photoshoot. On the way home we discussed the details and then further refined the look with the makeup artist and the model.Editing
I always do post-processing, although I tend to keep it quite natural. There is minimal skin retouching done, but I have applied dodge & burn quite liberally for dramatic effect. I have also toned the image to give it a pinkish look.In my camera bag
My camera bag is very small, since I am a m43 shooter. I have a Panasonic GX8, a Lumix 42.5mm f/1.7, a Lumix 25mm f/1.7, an Olympus 60/2.8 and a Lumix 14mm f/2.5 lens. Since I mostly shoot in studio (either my own or rental studios) I rarely carry lighting equipment around.Feedback
When working with people, the first thing to do is to build a solid team. I have worked for months with this make up artist and did a few shoots with the same model already. Actually, you can see her in many of my works, especially the most creative ones. Try to work with people which share your goals and views on art, make sure to listen advice from all team members. Although the photographer is generally responsible for the photoshoot and has the final word on decisions, I really advice keeping this a collaborative process. It often happens that the makeup artist or the model have an idea which can make the shoot.
