This photo was taken in my home studio in Saint Petersburg. The makeup artist, Anna Kushnir, painted the model in the dining room... we made a mess, but it was totally worth it! I was amazed about how quickly and amazingly she reproduced the famous Van Gogh painting Starry night on the model. At the same time the hair stylist, Elena Nikolenko worked on the hairstyle which complemented the look. Natalia Parkhomenko, a very talented model, was very patient the entire time which was crucial to get the painting done accurately.Time
We met at 4pm and started to shoot already at 6:30pm. The shooting went quickly, about 1 hour.Lighting
The lighting was a challange because I had to show the entire painting but at the same time avoid making it too flat. I went for Rembrandt lighting from the right so that the typical Rembrandt triangle fell on the star around the eye. The main light was gelled with an orange gel. I also added a blue-gelled kicker light on the left for better background separation and to create the effect of a night sky.Equipment
This was shot on a Panasonic GX8 with the Lumix 42.5mm f/1.7 lens. The main light was a Godox AD200 with a silver reflector. The kicklight was a Godox TT600 with no modifier. I used a Godox X1T-O to trigger the lights. As always, I shot tethered to better see the results.Inspiration
I love the works of Van Gogh and when we met the first time with Anna we talked about body and face painting. She proposed to reproduce a Van Gogh painting and I immediately agreed. The choice fell on Starry night, because the subject is abstract enough to be reproduced on a human face and the contrast between the bright stars and the darker sky is very interesting.Editing
Post-processing here was minimal. Aside from some healing-brush and a minimal color correction I did not do anything else.In my camera bag
Being a M43 shooter, I have a very small bag which is easy to carry around. Beside the beforementioned GX8 and 42.5mm I also have a Lumix 25mm and Olympus 60mm.Feedback
Choose a painting which can be reproduced on a non-flat surface. You also need to find a talented makeup artist like Anna and that is the hardest thing to do! As I always say, find a team of like-minded people and you can do anything, the limit is your imagination!
