Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken from the middle of the famous Russian River, outside Cooper Landing, Alaska. This is a brown bear cub, approximately 2 years old. Whenever he was successful (not that often) he would take the fish back up onto the bank and give to his momma and sibling. If he wasn't successful at landing a live fish, he'd occasionally take up carcasses that were floating down stream.

Time

After spending all day on the water, we were heading back to our campsite about 8pm. We'd heard and seen several groups of brown and black bears, females with multiple cubs.

Lighting

Being summer time in Alaska, we don't see the sun going down till after 11pm, and even then it doesn't get "dark" at night this far north. (We are the land of the midnight sun) Luckily for me, it was still bright as day, so I didn't have any issues with trying to get light on the bear.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 70D, with a 150-600 zoom lens. I didn't have a tripod, and I was crouching/kneeling in the middle of the cold rushing water to try and stabilize the lens while zoomed out to 450mm.

Inspiration

I am always on the lookout for nature and/or wildlife in the natural state, not the same shot someone else might take. If we are out fishing or exploring, I always keep my camera and multiple lenses on me, just in case I come across that one event that makes me think "Wow!" As the sayings go, "The best camera is the one you have on you" and I take it to heart when I'm out exploring. I wouldn't have ever gotten a shot like this if I only had my iPhone on me.

Editing

I generally try not to do a whole lot post processing, I believe that nature photography is best viewed as it happens live. Plus, I am not all that great in post processing, I don't know Lightroom/Photoshop very well. I did amp up the clarity a bit, and added a bit more green to make it pop, but it was minimal.

In my camera bag

I've always got my Canon70D in whichever bag I choose, but depending on where I'm going, I'll carry any of the following lenses. Tamron 150-600mm, Canon 75-300mm, Canon 50mm, Canon 10-22mm.

Feedback

Living in a state where outdoor activities are king, I look for pictures others can get excited about. Not everyone will see Alaska in the way I do, so I like to be able to show off my home-state to those who would never get to see it, and as a reminder for those who've been here before.
