Behind The Lens

Location

This was a fun day on the Russian River, outside Cooper Landing, Alaska. I've usually got a camera nearby whenever we head here to fish, as the bears are almost always on the river, getting fat for winter hibernation.

Time

These two siblings were having fun playing in the water in the early evening hours. They'd huff and puff at each other, and try to tackle each other into the water. This wasn't helping in there trying to catch fish though! Mom was up on the ridge, making sure nobody messed with her babies, and would roar if anyone got too close.

Lighting

This was all natural lighting, the summer and fall in Alaska is great to have sunlight into the evening hours.

Equipment

I carry a Canon 70D and various lenses, this was caught on my 75-300.

Inspiration

These two cubs were worth stopping and watching, they were so active and fun to watch. But then again, bears on the Russian River are always worth taking pictures of.

Editing

I try not to do a whole lot of editing on my photos, but I'll occasionally lower the exposure, and boost up the colors just a little bit if need be.

In my camera bag

I always pack my Canon 70D body and various lenses with me, but on the water I tend to travel light. I've always got my Canon 75-300 and 18-55 lenses, but I'll add in my 50mm and 10-22 if I've got something specific in mind to shoot. My newest toy, which helps in the bear photography is the Tamron 150-600mm. I've had more fun shooting with this lens than any other I own.

Feedback

My advice? Always be prepared, for any event that may happen, within reason of course. If I know I'm going to shoot bears, I've got the telephoto lenses ready to go. If I'm shooting the aurora or the sky, I've got my wide angle.
