This is Buenos Aires, Argentina iconic monument. The Obelisco de Buenos Aires (Obelisk of Buenos Aires) is a national historic monument located in the Plaza de la República, in the intersection of avenues Corrientes and 9 de Julio.
The Buenos Aires Obelisk was erected in 1936 to commemorate the fourth centenary of the first foundation of the city. It took approximately 160 days to be built.
Where the Obelisk stands now there was previously a church dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari, which was previously demolished. In that church the Argentine flag was officially hoisted for the first time in Buenos Aires, in 1812.
This fact is noted in one of the inscriptions on the North side of the monument and it is sometimes confused as the reason why it was built, but the commemoration of the City fourth centenary was the real one.
