The image was shot at the RSME grounds in Florida, Gauteng, South Africa. The home grounds for the Rand Society of Model Engineers. they have 2.5 km of track to run model locomotives on and meet on a regular basis to run their trains and haul passengers.Time
Late afternoon after a day running on the track. The sun was just starting to go down which gave lovely long rays of light.Lighting
The light for me was just prefect as the suns rays shone through the cleaning bays. the combination of steam and suns rays as the locomotive was being cleaned just worked really well for this backlit silhouette of the engine. Understanding light is key to great images especially moody images.Equipment
Camera: NIKON D80 Aperture: 6/1 ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/400 Focal Length: 1160/10 Handheld no FlashInspiration
My love for trains especially steam locomotives inspired this image. I'd been watching the light the previous week and had seen the suns rays in the cleaning bay. On the day I shot this I waited for this little engine to come in after a day on running on the tracks as it's one of my favourite steam loco models. The sun was just in the right place to give me the rays I wanted for the silhouetted image.Editing
I changed the colour of the image from as shot to this semi sepia as it fitted well with the old style locomotive for the feel that I wanted in the image. I felt that the sepia gave the image more moodiness. In my camera bag

Watch the light, see the light, know the light. Most of all understand light. Look around for possible images and see what you want to create in your minds eye then go out and shoot. Shoot a variety of angles. If you are passionate about a particular thing or hobby spend time there seeing what happens and looking for possible images. get to know the subject you plan to shoot so that you can get the best shots and best angles. Understand the camera settings to shoot correctly exposed images, know how to manipulate your settings in manual mode to create moody images. Work with the light especially the gold hour light it can be quite magical.
