The shot was taken at the Reefsteamers Steam Depot inGgermiston, South AfricaTime
The photo was taken in the golden hour. sometime between 5h30 and 6h30 to 7h00 on a winter morning. I don't recall the exact time, guess I could look it up on the EXIF data if I really needed to.Lighting
The light was just perfect with the rising morning sun coming in from the left of the image adding light to the side of the locomotive and the highlighting the plumes of smoke and steam. Never mid adding that rich golden tinge the the rails which from part of the network within the dept. I think I had just chosen the perfect spot that morning for this image. Ive been to this place a few time to shoot and really did just choose the right spot at the right moment that winter morning.Equipment
I shot this with my trusty Nikon D7100, Aperture of F6.3 ISO 250, shutter speed 1/100 with my Sigma 18-250 lense. Handheld as it gets busy here and there is not time to move and set up tripod with moving trains.Inspiration
My love of steam locomotives inspired me to join Reefsteamers and be a part of saving these grand old ladies for future generations. These locomotive excite me so taking this shot and being so close to a steam loco in action is just music to my soul, add having my camera in had and you have the happiest photographer on earth. I love capturing the team and strength these engines display.Editing
My post processing is basic as I'm old school and stick to only doing in PS or Lightroom what you could do in a darkroom. So I'll adjust contrast, highlights, doge and burn. I like to keep it as one see's it as much as possible so I try shoot in camera for minimal editing post.In my camera bag
My Nikon D7100, Sigma 18-250 lense, Nikkor 105macro, Sigma 70-200 2.8 lense, Nikon Flash, Yougnou Flash, triggers, remote, for these shoots i'll ad a UV filter and raincoat for the camera. I also always have a lenspen and lense cloth and spare batteries. and a bunch of SD cards I have about 10. All this goes into my Lowepro Backpack bag.Feedback
