Behind The Lens

Location

Every year in Vancouver (before Covid), there is a jazz festival. One of the annual events is a concert in the park close to where I live. That's where I took this shot

Time

The concert starts mid day and goes on until around 10PM each weekend . So I likely took this shot in the early evening but being summer time there was still a lot of light avaiable.

Lighting

Yes there is a combination of natural light and stage lighting

Equipment

Canon 5D Mark II (which died in a fall a couple of years ago on a windy day when the tripod fell over). 70-200F4 lens, hand held, F5.6, ISO 640 1/80 second (the lens has IS - whew).

Inspiration

I enjoy what is known as concert photography and so whenver I have a chance I bring my camera and look for a good shot. I'll find my way as close to the stage as I can get to be able to capture the artist in action.

Editing

Yes - this was a difficult shot. The background was a banner that was used for the Jazz festival, however I wanted the focus to be the bass player, so I ensured that the background was blurred. I also converted it from colour to black and white as the background banner colours were overpowering and took away from the subject

In my camera bag

I shoot both film and disgital, but I always choose one or the other when I go out. Unless I am going on a trip I usually also commit to a single lens and perhaps an alternate just in case, but I like to travel light, so I normally commit.I have a range of lens: Primes are 50mm and 85mm, zooms are 24-105mm and 70-200. I also have a good carbon fibre sturdy tripod (no more windy day accidents). I also now often shoot long exposure so I have a 10 and 6 stop ND filter with a Kase attachment to mount them.

Feedback

It's all about anticipation when shooting musicians. Typically they are very animated when they play or sind certain notes. Watch them for a while and learn hwo they react as they sing. Then get ready, listen and anticipate the shot.
