This was taken a little after 10 pm.Lighting
There are actually three light sources that are seen in the photo. Far left the flashing lights of a park ranger. Far right the setting moon and then the ambient light of the sky through long exposure to pull it all together.Equipment
Canon 5D MIII, Canon EF 14mm f/2.8, Manfrotto tripod with a gimbal headInspiration
There are a lot of great photos of Grand Prismatic. I wanted to do a slightly different take on a very popular place. Incidentally there were no other people at this sight but my wife and I. Try to do that in the daytime.Editing
This photo was taken at an ISO of 6400 so I needed to take out some noise add clarity and increase the saturation and vibrance slightly, but due to being properly exposed at 20 sec did not need to change the exposure at all.In my camera bag
I am typically planning for both wildlife and landscapes and I am an over packer so here goes: Canon 5D M III, second-hand Canon 7D Mark II, Canon EF 14mm f/2.8, Canon EF 24 -105mm, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM and a second-hand Canon EF 500mm f/4.0. A Promaster Variable ND Filter, Tiffen Circular Polarizer and Tiffen Color Grad ND .6 Filter. A Manfrotto Tripod with a gimbal head rounds out what I will take with me! I am covered for pretty much anything and then some with this list which has taken me several years to accumulate.Feedback
Tripod is a must for these super long exposures, patience and a warm coat will also go a long way when working after the sun goes down. Scout the area with some daylight plan the shot and then hope for some interesting clouds.
