This is definitely one of my favorite images from our workshop to Navajo Lands. Our lead photographer, Mylo Fowler, is well connected having grown up on the Navajo Reservation and is an absolute genius with lighting. He was able to get us access to the Canyon about 45 minutes before the hordes descend. It was amazing to be alone in this surreal place. Unfortunately by the time I found this shot there were several hundred people in the canyon and all looking to get the perfect shot with their camera phone. With a little patience and a lot of luck I was able to capture this image on 3/27/15 at 10:04 am.Lighting
It is hard to explain how amazing the lighting is in these slot canyons I hope this image helps to convey that surreal world below ground. The light is a gradient that continues to change from white hot at the top of the canyon to deep cool colors at the bottom. I needed a 1/2 second exposure in order to get the lighting on this curve just right.Equipment
Canon 5DMIII, Canon 14mm, Manfrotto 3021BPROInspiration
There are so many awe inspiring scenes in both Upper and Lower Canyon but when I saw this scene it captivated me. I loved how the detritus under the heart appears to have been left behind by the Artist who sculpted this scene. Most of the canyon is pretty well scoured during the rainy season but due to the curve here some rocks have piled up creating the feeling that they dropped right out of the heart.Editing
I had to do very little post processing to this image. Cropped, set my white and black adjusted the clarity a little and increase the vibrance and saturation to where it matched my memory. In my camera bag
I am a consummate over-packer. I usually have my 5D and my 70D and 3 or 4 lenses. The 14mm is always on one of them if I am shooting landscapes. I will also have my 24-105 or my 70-200 then just in case some animals happen to be lurking around I will have my Tamron 150-600 or my Canon 400mm DO. Plus my tripod, filters, extenders, triggers. I need a pack mule. Any chance that will be a prize soon?Feedback
Slow down. Both you and your shutter. I know it is a pain but always have your tripod. Your images will be much more crisp and it will allow you to get low and slow with your ISO and your shutter. But mostly just enjoy this great planet that we have been allowed to spend a little bit of time on.
