Sometimes when I'm having a nasty, stormy kind of a day and things aren't going they way I had planned, I engage in some photo therapy by driving around my neighborhood and catching whatever comes my way. This lovely creature was waiting for me around a bend, taking a break from the daily field and farm work that takes place on Amish homesteads. It was just the kind of other-worldly scene I was craving.

You captured it well, even catching the horse's longing to be somewhere else! We all sometimes have to escape our daily lives, photography is a great way to do that!

Behind The Lens

Location

Holmes County, Ohio is unique in that it is home to the largest concentration of Amish settlements in the world. The Plain people of this area often farm their land using Belgian or Percheron field horses. This beauty lives just a couple of miles from my home and happened to be out enjoying the evening just before a storm rolled in. She was the perfect prescription for my photo-therapy outing after a stressful day.

Time

The gorgeous, rich light came from an early evening moment and a sky of thick clouds I absolutely love shooting on cloudy days!

Lighting

Because of the indirect subset bouncing off of the eastern sky, the natural light source provided the perfect balance and gave the horse just the spotlight she needed to stand out from the background.

Equipment

For this photo, I used a Canon 6d with a Tamron 17-35mm lens edited for color and clarity in Lightroom CC.

Inspiration

The beauty of this region in My home land of Ohio gives me plenty of opportunities to capture an inspiring moment. On this particular day, I had experienced some personal challenges, so I grabbed my camera, jumped in my car, and made it my mission to get lost on the country roads. As I was returning home, I rounded a corner, and this scene appeared before me. I took two shots, and this one was my favorite of the two and, in fact, of the whole evening.

Editing

I tend to do very little post processing. For this photo, I used Adobe Lightroom CC to increase the warm tones very slightly and to increase the clarity a bit.

In my camera bag

My bag is pretty minimal-- a Canon 6d with four lenses: the Tamron 17-35mm, a Nifty Fifty, an 85mm, and some manner of telephoto. I also carry a tripod, a lens cleaning kit, an extra battery, and a variety of silly hats for when I'm doing portraits.

Feedback

Like a good scout, always be prepared! Have camera and equipment ready to snag those surprise moments. I like to get lost for an hour or two on the back roads then set my GPS for home. I tend to shoot with a wide-open aperture and underexpose just a bit to catch the dramatic skies. I try to experiment with different angles and camera settings and always try to take a few steps to see my subject from a different perspective. Oh, and if it's a horse, call her Sweetie and tell her how very beautiful she is. :-)
