Behind The Lens

Location

This picture of my girl and my pooch was taken on my kitchen top.

Time

I shot this at around 11:00 am and this is the first ever time I made use of window lighting to create an image.

Lighting

The subjects are places right in front of the window. There is no other external light source used. Because it was the morning light, there was a harsh patch of light that fell on the kitchen top and I brought in artificial sun rays in post production to make it appear that sun was directly falling on that patch of light. On the other hand, I shot my image, while exposing for the highlights on my daughters face. The idea was that neither should the highlights be blown out nor should the shadows be absolutely dark. So that, if the image be shot in RAW then I can bring all the details back in post production.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D800 with Nikon 50mm f1.4g. No other extra light was used. I always shoot wide open at f1.4

Inspiration

I just wanted to bring the dynamics of my dog and my daughter's relationship out. My dog, Mustang, had only a week ago joined our family and I was yearning to photograph him but because his vaccinations weren't finished so we couldn't take him outdoors. Left with no choice, I placed the kids closest to the source of light- the kitchen window and that's how the image and my first tryst with Windows came about

Editing

Yes, I did very minor post processing. I increased light on the faces of the subjects with the help of curves Layer in PS. Then I added the fake sun rays with the help of a simple technique where u make a lot of spots with a white colour paint brush and run motion blur on those spots layer. Then I added a tinge of blue in the image with the help of levels layer by moving the blue slider. Finally, I flattened all the layers and then as a last step, dodged the highlights and some very dark shadows (like my dog's eye) a bit more.

In my camera bag

I am a poor photographer ????. I don't own much gear. I have a Nikon D800. For my studio and indoor shoots I use 50mm f1.4g and for outdoors I use 135mm f2. I did use 70-200 f2.8 earlier but I preferred moving to 135mm simply because it given me more space in my frame to explore the back ground and add to the narrative of the image.

Feedback

When u plan to place your subject on the window, I personally feel the best hours of the day to do that is during midday and afternoon when the light is too harsh for you to step out but if shot indoors u get stunning light on ur subjects. Make your subject wear light and airy clothes so that light is allowed to pass through and the more light travels through the image the more magnificent your final product will look. While exposing, always make sure that neither highlights burn out nor shadows turn dark. When dealing with still subjects, keep your focus at single shot and if your subjects are moving, immediately change to continuous focus. And remember, ur not gunning for one hundred great images, u want just one amazing shot, so make sure u don't overshoot and aren't too deflated if most of the shots are out of focus (50mm is notorious for missing focus when used wide open) for as long as u have that one shot with good focus, you don't need to worry about the rest of the 100 out of focus images.
