Location
The picture was taken in the old shipyard of Baasrode (Belgium). Some places of the shipyard didn't change with planks and material everywhere...and then I saw this worned and rusty "bollard", probably there for decades and surrounded by those chains...Time
It was in the early morning and I remember it was really frozen on that day. But the cold gave the perfect additional dimension to the abandonned workshop shipyardLighting
There were large and tall windows almost everywhere with a perfect natural light...just had to find the right position and flex a little bit my legs to "capture the scene"Equipment
The picture was shot on a Nikon D5100 with the basic lens 18-105. No tripod, no flash...just needed my mittens to fight a little against the cold!Inspiration
I guess I wanted to shoot this bollard because it reflects in some ways my own state of mind and probably the same state of mind of some other people... I mean, we are often scared of change and prefer to remain "anchored" in our frustrations : we invent ourself chains and padlocks stopping us from moving on... and finally get sad or unhappy...Editing
I just decided to light up a little bit more the bollard and use the HDR effect to bring out the rusty texture of the bollard and intensify the meaning of the title. In my camera bag
Excepted my Nikon D5100 and the basic 18-105, I'm now used to shoot with my new Sigma 17-50 f 2.8 which is quite robust and really easy to use. I also have a tripod and a 35mm f 1.8 but I do not often use this one.Feedback
I would say, try first to find the good place. When I say good place, I mean the perfect place talking to you(r heart and state of mind). Then, let's just speak your feelings... I took me just one shoot to take this one... Because I knew it was the right place and the perfect object ;)
