Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a secluded area just by my home studio.

Time

This is probably my favourite image from that series. It was taken at 4pm on a cold, rainy evening. We were running out of time and since it was such a gloomy day we had to shoot quick. This was the very first image I shot from this editorial.

Lighting

This was all natural light. Since it was raining, we needed to be quick to not ruin the beautiful hair and makeup. It was a very dull day, no sun in sight but this really helped create a moody effect that we were hoping for.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5D Mark III and my 70-200 f 2.8 lens.

Inspiration

My friend Kelsey is a wedding dress designer. She was in town with some of her new collection. Rather than doing a traditional bridal photoshoot we wanted something very avant-garde and unique. The entire team really came together to create a dark, fairytale inspired shoot titled "Twisted Fairytale".

Editing

Post-processing is one of my favourite parts of a shoot. I love retouching. For this shot I retouched her skin and fixed some minor details such as evening out the eye makeup and a few fly-away hairs. I mostly desaturated this image as I did not want any bright colours. Overall, the final image is very similar to the original.

In my camera bag

Of course, my Canon 5D Mark III. My 85mm and my 50mm are my two favourite lenses, very rarely do I use anything else. If I want to try something different I go for my 70-200mm, this lens is my favourite for shooting weddings and family portraits.

Feedback

The most important thing: an amazing team. I could not have shot this without the amazing team of people who helped create this. Your team is a major part in your fashion shoots. You need a model who knows what they are doing and can take direction. A makeup artist/hairstylist is just as important. Their skills will help bring the vision to life and people will be looking at the model overall so the makeup and hair need to be executed beautifully. For this particular shoot, the dress had to be spectacular. Designers and stylists (depending on your theme) are very important. For that little extra touch we had an amazing florist create a bouquet that would help bring the theme together.
