Behind The Lens

Location

I was lucky enough to capture this shot on safari at MalaMala Game Reserve in South Africa. This was a bucket list trip for me, but now I've caught the safari bug and one trip may not be enough.

Time

This was an evening shot, about 20 minutes before sunset. Although our safari was towards the end of the African summer, we arrived at MalaMala during an unusually cool, rainy spell. During our first few game drives it seemed as though all the animals had just hunkered down and, while we saw many species, there were very few open eyes and even less action. Just what every nature photographer longs for! Our incredible ranger (James Moodie) worked extremely hard to get us in position for great shots, but I got the feeling even he was getting desperate. As we approached the end of daylight on our evening game drive, the sun peeked out from behind the clouds and illuminated this gorgeous scene.

Lighting

This was all natural lighting.

Equipment

Handheld and shot with a Canon 5DIII and EF ? 24mm?105mm ? F/4.0 L IS lens.

Inspiration

How could I not take this shot? Wildlife photography often involves somewhat unpredictable animal behavior and infinite patience. When two cooperative subjects strike a pose in front of a beautiful background - grab the camera, check your settings (quickly!) and get the shot.

Editing

I did some minimal amount of post-processing to this shot as I wanted to warm up the scene and bring out some of the colors of the sky.

In my camera bag

My bag isn't quite as plump as those of the pros - when I ask for a 1DX II...hubby says budget. I've had wonderful results with my 5DIII and 7DII combined with the Canon EF 100?400mm f/4.5?5.6L IS II and 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. I truly believe you can capture amazing photos with just about any camera as long as you understand how to get the best results out of your gear.

Feedback

It was quite an honor to receive this blog invitation, and although I know I have many areas of my photography needing improvement, I have learned a lot along this journey. Be patient, be prepared to wait...a lot, look for the light, and when all the elements come together be prepared to act quickly.
