Behind The Lens

Location

At that time when the photo was taken, I was living in a rented apartment and this wall was probably the best feature of the flat

Time

I think it was around 12.30pm

Lighting

I had to pull the curtains apart and let the light come in the room because the way the flat was oriented you don't get much natural light but it did the job for that time.

Equipment

I used Canon EOS 1100D 18-55 mm and the hard part was to make it stay still because I didn't have a tripod back then so I had to improvise and I surrounded my camera with stuff to hold it still. And yes it was a so called "selfie" but not the typical one.

Inspiration

It was few days before the deadline of my beginners course of Photography, where all students were supposed to have an exhibition and everybody had the chance to submit 3 photos. I still hadn't chosen my 3 and I was down with the flu but then, as I like to say "The fever struck" . I just came up with this idea of the special relationship between a cat and a woman, that almost mystical bond with a slight modern touch.

Editing

In my imagination the photo was black&white from the beginning so that was basically what I did with it. I decided to leave all the small details untouched and even not to correct the perspective because I believe that it is the little things that give life to a photo.

In my camera bag

Well I'm a spontaneous person so I don't really give it too much thought before I go. I always have my EOS 1100D and depending on the time of the day I carry some ND filters and always a good mood.

Feedback

You just got to go with your gut and not force things. That's probably the most important lesson that I've learnt. Also dealing with animals is not easy, you have to "feel" their vibe and let them want to cooperate not force them. Just don't go for the amazing shot, let the idea come to you and embrace every little chance you get. Just trust your inner voice about it, have your camera with you and have fun :)
