Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken north of the Arctic Circle in Norway.

Time

It was late in the evening - it was summer and we were just past the time of the midnight sun. This was maybe around 11pm as the sun was just starting to set.

Lighting

Setting sun was lighting the right side of the mountain making it a little tricky to avoid losing all the detail in the forest or blowing out the sky. I took a number of different exposures to make sure I had the best of highlight and shadow detail - though this is not a HDR photo - it is one shot.

Equipment

From memory I used a Canon 1D3 with a 24-70 L series zoom lens. I set up on my manfrotto tripod with the legs in the water of the lake.

Inspiration

I was driving past this mountain and unable to stop at the time but I knew it was definitely worth a second look. So I took everyone home and then set out at about 10:30pm to get the shot. I wanted to catch the setting sun side lighting the mountain as it looked so beautiful. The scenery in Norway inspires you at every corner. I only wish I had had more time to explore this amazing country.

Editing

Mainly just working on the the highlight/shadow slider and the curves in lightroom. Black and white processing was done in Tonality CK using one of their presets and then playing a little with it.

In my camera bag

Field work - 2 x Olympus OM-D EM-1's, Olympus 12-40 f2.8, Olympus, 40-150 f2.8 + 1.4 teleconverter, Leica/Lumix 42.5 f1.2, Olympus 75 f1.8, Olympus 7-14 f2.8, Olympus 60 f2.8 Macro, 2 x Olympus flash. Weddings - 2 x Canon 5D3's, Canon 24-70 f2.8 L MkII, Canon 70-200 f2.8 L MkII, Canon 50 f1.4, Canon 85 f1.8, Canon 16-35 f2.8 L MkII, Canon 100 f2.8 Macro, Canon 14 f2.8 L, Canon 135 f2 L, 2 x Canon 600EX-RT flash units, Westcott Ice Light, Spider double holster camera belt.

Feedback

Always look for a different angle - I had to trudge through scrub and water to get the right angle and to find these rocks in the foreground. Be on the lookout for places where you see something nice to shoot and make sure you go back when the light is best - don't be satisfied to just grab a quick shot if the light is not great - it will end up looking like a tourist snap shot. Don't always shoot standing up - look for a different camera position. This shot came about because I went looking for something different and was willing to get wet - be committed to your art.
