Location
This was taken on Malin Hill - one of the little known old streets of Nottingham. I spent a March evening having my first go at night photography.Time
Being March it got dark quite early. I spent a couple of hours walking around the old parts of the city and this was taken about 6.30pm. There was still a little blue left in the sky.Lighting
Looking back I can now see the difficulty presented by the large dynamic range of the image - the bright street lights in particular. At the time I just set the aperture to f/16 to get a large depth of field - the benefit has been to get the starburst effect on the street lights.Equipment
I used an Olympus E-30 mounted on a tripod and a shutter release. The lens was an Olympus 40-150 kit lens.Inspiration
I was attracted by the leading lines, the tones and the textures.Editing
I processed the image using Photoshop - creating the mono version. I adjusted the tones and contrast. In my camera bag
I try to carry as little equipment as I can and choose what I take out depending on where I am going. I will normally take either my Olympus OMD EM-5 or Panasonic GX8 -often with my Lumix 14-140 or Olympus 7-14.Feedback
Night photography gives the opportunity to capture some really interesting images. Using a tripod and remote shutter release for long exposures is a must and you should set your camera manually. This puts you in control and gets rid of the restrictions created by trying to juggle aperture, shutter speed and ISO.
