This has the feel of a David Shepherd painting. Excellent.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the Great Central Railway at Loughborough not too far from my home. It was the second visit I had made for the February gala when trains ran until 5pm-ish and the yard was open to photographers until around 10pm.

Time

Between 7 and 9 pm on a dark and cold February night.

Lighting

Taken using available light only.

Equipment

Taken with an Olympus E30 using a tripod and an Olympus 14-45 kit lens exposed for 10 secs at f/3.5 ISO 200 and a focal length of 28mm.

Inspiration

I have always been a fan of railways and trains and we are fortunate in the UK to have so many preserved railways. The chance to capture steam locos and trains at night was fantastic and the choice of potential subjects was a bit mind blowing. This combination of light and dark with the highlights of the polished metalwork and flood lights cried out to be recorded.

Editing

There a a minimal amount of cropping and some adjustment of the white balance. Mainly the post-processing centred on adjusting the curves to recover some of the highlights and bring out more detail in the darks

In my camera bag

I always have my Olympus ZX1 as a everyday carry around and a backup to my other cameras. Depending on how long or for how far I have to walk I will choose either my Olympus E3 and 12/60 + 50/200 lenses or my E-M5 plus Panasonic 25mm f/1.4 and 14/140 lenses.

Feedback

Trains at night can be difficult but many railway preservation groups organise night shoots. There are usually plenty of experienced photographers on hand to offer advice and help too.
