Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a hiking path part of St Annes Spa property in Grafton Ontario, Canada while there as a birthday gift.

Time

This photo was taken about an hour before sunset.

Lighting

I was struggling to find good photos at this time of the day because the lighting was too harsh - that is there was just too much of it; the Sun was too high, there were no clouds in the sky. However as I went into the forest, the trees were tall enough and thick enough to block most of the sun and create some nice sun flares. What I really liked about this photo though is the eeriness of it. The natural darkness of the forest contrasted perfectly with the brightness of the Sun to create a sort of magical feeling.

Equipment

As I was walking on a hike,, I tried not to concentrate too much on my photography and spend time with nature. That being said, I didn't bring my tripod with me, nor did I have many lenses. As such, I took this photo with my Canon Rebel T4i, a Canon 18-135 mm Lens, and a polarizer filter. I feel this photo would have been enhanced by a better camera and a tripod. The Canon Rebel T4i is very much an entry level camera and noise was an annoying factor in this photo. I had to do a lot of post-processing using Lightroom to eliminate a lot of it.

Inspiration

I looked up and saw how cool and eerie the whole atmosphere made me feel (I really find the angle of the tree to the right really helped that as well) and took quite a few shots. This ended up being my favourite, and I ended up finishing a few edits on this one photo.

Editing

As previously mentioned, I used Lightroom to remove some of the noise from the photo. I also used Lightroom to add atmosphere to the picture. I try not to do too much post-processing to photos. I like the photo and the setting to speak for itself. At most, what I do is edit the photo to ensure the lighting is as it was when I was there. I find photographs do not capture real-time light as one's eyes are able to. So I try to edit the photo to how I remember seeing it myself when I was there - attempting to exude the feelings that overcame me at the time.

In my camera bag

I normally have my tripod, a few ND filters, a polarizer filter, my Canon Rebel T4i (which I need to upgrade!), my 18-135 mm Lens for more photographic freedom, as well as a 50 mm Lens that's great for landscape shots and, due to its lower f-stop capabilities, helps me reduce noise. (I didn't have that lens at the time of this photo, as it was one of my first ones I've ever taken with a DSLR).

Feedback

Always listen to those around you. Everyone has eyes, but not everyone sees. Sometimes, even though you're the photographer, you miss something that someone else might see. I know some photographers that get very defensive when they are told "hey take a picture of that, that looks nice". I always try to listen and take at least one shot of the subject I was told about. Who knows, it might end up like this one! Another piece of advice: always take your camera with you; you never know what you'll see, even on your own street!
