Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at a rodeo in a small town nestled in a valley at the base of the Cascade Mountains in Western Washington. During the summer, the cowboys travel to these small town rodeos around the region. I enjoy all types of photography, including action packed---even at my age.

Time

This event started in the middle of the day, so this was taken at approximately 3:00 pm.

Lighting

It was a very warm day, with a glaring sun, so that was my source of light.

Equipment

I was using my Nikon D7100 with a 55-300mm lens----hand held.

Inspiration

I used to enjoy attending this particular rodeo years ago & would try my luck at capturing good shots with my 35mm then. We had not been to this event for some years, so decided to attend. I picked a special spot to try for some good shots once again. I took many photos on this day of the bronc riding, barrel racing, & bull riding. I used a sequence of shots, using continuous mode, & lucked out by clicking at the right split second when this cowboy was airborne.

Editing

I did some cropping to bring the action into the center of focus. I shoot with Raw, so did the usual quick editing.

In my camera bag

I just recently acquired a full frame--Nikon D600 & also a 70-200mm f2.8 lens. Along with those items, I have a Nikon D7100, 24-70mm f2.8, 55-300mm f 4.5, 50mm f1.8, & the kit lens of 18-55mm. I have started out with some inexpensive lenses & have added a couple better quality lenses over time. Being retired, I have to plan for these purchases. I am very happy with what I have now with the DSLR. I also have a couple of point of shoot cameras that I can throw in my purse when I do not care to carry the weight of the DSLR around. I am known for always being "armed" with a camera. We live part of the year in a 55+ park in South Texas. I have the reputation of being the person to chronicle each event in this park, which varies from dances & water volleyball to the bird activity.

Feedback

My opinion with such a capture is partly pure luck. I was using the continuous mode, but could have clicked as the cowboy hit the ground, instead of being airborne My advice is to take many shots when trying to capture such an event. I did this hand held, because I was moving continuously to try to capture shots as the action went all around the arena. It is a matter of holding that camera steady & using continuous mode. I zeroed in on the cowboy coming out of the chute & took maybe 4 or 5 shots as he rode, which including him coming off that bull.
