Behind The Lens

Location

This is by far my most popular photo on Viewbug and elsewhere.. It's the San Francisco Bay Bridge. It was taken from the Embarcadero in San Francisco.

Time

I had gotten there with a group of photographers before sunset. About 6:00PM.

Lighting

The lighting worked out by accident. I had taken several shots as the sun went down, which was actually behind me. But as it got darker the street lights came on and lit up the old pilings in front of me. I didn't even realize how much the clouds were lit up until I actually down loaded the photo in my PC.

Equipment

I have a Nikon D3200. The lens was a Sigma 10-20mm wide angle. The camera was mounted to my Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

I am fortunate to live in the San Francisco Bay area. The possibilities are endless. It is one of the most photographed areas in the world yet new, exciting shots come out everyday. I love night photography. The camera picks up so much more than you actually see. I love looking at the photos later and discovering what was really captured that I didn't see on scene.

Editing

I use Lightroom and Elements. I don't know the programs real well yet so all of my editing is pretty minimal. I generally use the basics. I add a bit of contrast and a tiny bit of saturation and will adjust the exposure a bit.

In my camera bag

It depends on what I am shooting. At the moment I only have one camera, a Nikon D3200. I have graduated from kit lenses however. My go to lens right now is my Sigma 18-300MM. It has be very versatile but it's not particularly fast. If I'm doing landscapes or cityscapes, etc I bring the Sigma 10-20MM. I have a few filters and a cable release that always go. If I'm doing an event or wedding I'll bring my 50MM prime for fun and my SB900 flash.

Feedback

For these types of shots use manual settings. Learning to use manual really adds so much more dimension and possibilities to your photography. While I am an amateur, the group I was with all used presets and weren't able to catch the water the way I did. Get a good tripod. The money is so worth it for sharp images. Finally, go with others. Taking a bunch of camera gear to a big city can, unfortunately, make a you a target for crime.
