This is my first time trying Astrophotography. So overwhelmed when I got my first glimpse of it.

Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken on the abandoned reservoir on top of a mountain in Seychelles.

Time

My favorite subject is the sunset. But that day I am learning how to use the flash to highlight some foreground in low light condition. I have waited for the sun to almost reach the horizon and took some shots.

Lighting

Lighting is a bit tricky especially in this shoot. I wanted to experiment how flash affects the overall result so if by chance I have overexposed something then I will lose the sun as it sets A series of shots have to be taken and decide what is the best.

Inspiration

What I love about this photo is the quietness of the place. And I want to show that. If you roam around the area, being abandoned not much to see. It is up to us photographers to find the beauty on each place we go to.

Editing

Taking sunset is a bit tricky. Most often times the shadows has no highlights and on this day I am trying to use the flash to highlight some foreground. I am trying not to show it on the reflection on the water so I have to go high. Then I edited the colors by enhancing it and darkening some silhouettes.

In my camera bag

On the day I took this photograph I only have a point and shoot and an iPhone. This was taken in March 2015 and I only bought my DSLR on July 2015. Nowadays my bag has Canon IXUS 115 HS (point and shoot), Fujifilm d4500 (hybrid), Canon EOS 600D (DSLR), my macro lens attachment, ND4 filter, Cross filter, extra batteries for my Fujifilm camera, flashlight and a tripod.

Feedback

We normally take sunset as it is. My advice is find something to frame it on or add another point of interest to compliment the setting sun. The keyword is COMPLIMENT. Sometimes when we add subjects it override the main one. Ask yourself this question "What will the story be?" ... then decide from there how to shoot it. If by chance you lost the sun that day and felt you have not done enough. Go back the next day or some other day. Some photographers tend to never go back to the same place thinking either they have exploited it or cannot repeat the same conditions. I have tons of sunset photos of almost the same places and you will be surprised that not one of them are the same.
