Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is very special to me...my very first photo shoot with a photography group. I was invited on my very first Boudoir shoot... learned about lighting and manual setting (though I was using a hybrid then). We did this in an abandoned construction.

Time

Very excited that day that I went to our meeting place as early as 530 am. Sadly some of the group members arrived around 7am and by the time we arrived to the location it is already 8:30am Trying to catch the early morning light, we immediately proceeded to shoot. The softer light of the morning added to the drama of the dingy poorly lighted surroundings. This was taken at 9:34am.

Lighting

Since the location is on an abandoned construction, the natural light seeping in is not enough for the shoot in some areas. So my colleagues brought in a studio light. But this one is candid... after the taking of the shoot, the model asked one of the photographer if she could see what he have taken. That is when I took this shot... no studio lights, pure natural light

Equipment

This shot is through Fujifil FinePix S4500 (a hybrid) at f/5.1 1/4 sec ISO-800 fl-18mm

Inspiration

Since this is my first Boudoir photo shoot, I mainly observe and asked my colleagues as to how they are taking their pictures. Mostly I take candid shots and show it to my mentor. And this is one of those candid moments. I saw a great opportunity and snap on it. After this short break, they proceeded to the next location. When I showed this to my mentor as we are walking, he said to me ... "you might be learning right now but I always admire your timing and your eye."

Editing

The only post-processing I did is converting this picture into Black & White. This is my first photo shoot and I am not keen to editing yet. Honestly, this is also the same day that my mentor gave me a copy of Adobe Photoshop. I learned to edit two to three weeks after this shoot.

In my camera bag

During this shoot, I only have my camera since it is a hybrid. That was June 2013 then. Now at 2020, I have my first dslr, a Canon EOS 600D with 18-135mm wide angles lens and a kit lens of 18-55mm. In my bag I also have my hybrid with me and a point and shoot camera, a Canon Ixus 115 HS. Packed with it are my filters, my step-up and step-down rings, extra batteries for my hybrid, lens cloth and portable tripods mainly for my point and shoot and my mobile phone.

Feedback

I am mainly a Landscape Photographer but once in a while I delve into this type of photography. One thing I learn in Landscape photography that I apply in this shoot is to take advantage of the natural light, know what kind it is on different times of the day. Sometimes in landscape photography when the light is not right, like an overcast... we find time to shoot some other things surrounding us other than the main subject. Learn to look for precious moments...it is fleeting but once you capture it, it is better that the main subject.
