Location
This photo was taken in the Eastern Sierra near Lee Vining, California.Time
I got up before dawn to get out to this location which is just steps off the main highway.Lighting
I knew the morning light on the mountains would give the best effect.Equipment
I used a Nikon D700 with a 28-300 lens. I made sure to use the longest lens setting I could to foreshorten the background and make the mountains look bigger.Inspiration
I lived in Lee Vining for a year and drove by this site every day. I took many pictures of it at different times of day and different angles. I like the rustic feeling of the old cabin and the way people used to live in this area.Editing
I did some saturation and clarity and I also took out a barbed wire fence that was put up to keep tourists from destroying the property. It was not at all attractive and took away from the natural feeling of the setting. In my camera bag
I always carry my Nikon D700, a 28-300mm Nikon lens, an 18-35mm wide angle lens, a 10mm fish eye and a 40mm micro lens. Plus a variety of filters including 2 ND filters for long exposures on sunny days.Feedback
My advice for landscapes is shoot early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid harsh shadows. Also cloudy days are good for even lighting.
