Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from Bamford Edge (Hope Valley, Derbyshire) overlooking Ladybower Reservoir. My friend (as pictured) and I both have a keen interest in photography and like to get out and about.

Time

This photo was taken on January 17th 2015, and entailed a 45 minute hike in the dark with blistering cold winds that often sweet the Peaks all to get the perfect sunrise.

Lighting

We didn’t get the perfect sunrise we anticipated, however as the sun rose higher in the morning sky it cast great shadows and lighting across the Peak District.

Equipment

Hand held on my Sony SLT-A77 with the 17-50mm Kit Lens.

Inspiration

My friend and I often have early morning / late night adventures trying new things with lighting from the moon and sun. We often scour the internet for new locations and ideas; this particular location was one that I have passed on many occasions and we both decided to give it a try.

Editing

Some minimal post-processing tweaks using Lightroom and a couple of dust spots removed.

In my camera bag

Before I make any journey I always plan what I’m going to need; Sometime travelling light if I’m going to be hiking or fully kitted out if there’s just a short walk. However I always take my Lowepro Slingshot bag equipped with my Sony A77V, Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 AT-X Pro DXII (My favourite lens), Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG APO, my Manfrotto MK394-PQ 394 Tripod, Spare battery and a bunch of Polarizer and ND Filters just in-case… I usually keep my second bag packed with my other equipment in the boot of my car, just incase…

Feedback

The weather can change in an instant in the Peak District and I would advise to always be prepared for any condition. Dusk and Dawn have real opportunities for changing the most dullest of shots to something spectacular.
