Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the entrance to Petra, a historical and archaeological city at south Jordan.

Time

The photo was taken around mid-day. Exactly when all the tourist usually come to that place, and I was pretty lucky to catch a moment without people around.

Lighting

Because the entrance to Petra is actually very narrow cranny - there is no direct sun on most of the surface. few areas that did receive such direct and harsh light had to be fixed in the post processing stage. all the rest getting a reflected light from the rock which is red-brownish rock. the result is very pleasing soft orange casting on the image.

Equipment

Canon 5D Mk.II with 16-35 f/2.8 mk.II

Inspiration

At the moment that I saw the horse and carriage passing in the cranny I knew that I wanted to capture. the problem is most of the time people passed in the way. I had to wait at the same spot for about 30 minutes until I was lucky enough to get the composition that I wanted without too many people or other distractions.

Editing

yes, first i had to handle the spots that got harsh strong light. I'm usually using Lightroom 4 for such tasks. I reduced the highlights and the exposure of these spots. Afterwards I removed some trash that people left on the ground with the spot removal tool, and actually removed a small figure with the same manner that entered the frame behind the carriage. Then I add a bit contrast, clarity and sharpening to the image - that's all.

In my camera bag

Usually I travel light - camera, 2-3 lenses (24-105 f/4 IS, 16-35 f/2.8, and 85mm f/1.8) lens pen, spare battery and memory card.
