Behind The Lens

Location

During my Project 365, many of my self portraits were take around or in my house. The places were familiar, and I always took the challenge to not let location determine the look of a photo. This photo was taken in my own bedroom, standing in front of the windows.

Time

Oh, I remember I took ages curling my hair. It took much longer than planned, so around 6pm I'd finally setup my tripod and camera in my room. The first photos of the shoot were taken with another wall as backdrop, but light was fading. Standing in front of the window always helps when you need a little more light!

Lighting

I've been lucky with the lighting in my bedroom. One outer wall had large windows across, while there were more windows on the wall next to it. Plenty of light for indoor shooting! Since the room is facing north, there were never hard shadows, allowing for soft, even lighting. Sometimes, it can feel boring. But at other times, it's the right kind of lighting to just focus on the subject of the photo and get close.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon Rebel XTi, the Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens on a Hama Star tripod. The release the shutter, I used the Canon RC-1 remote.

Inspiration

Self portraits were a big part of why I started photography. I wanted a medium to express myself in and show this other side of me. It's a form of therapy for me. So whenever I feel down, when thoughts flood my head - I usually go out (or stay in) and set up a shoot. Some are simple in their setup, like this one. Some are a little more elaborate. This photo was motivated by the need to create again after I'd quit my Project 365 two months before and I hadn't really taken many photos up until this moment. It was a way of finding myself again and going back to the basics.

Editing

Honestly, no. I shot in jpeg in a custom shooting profile. There's been a little contrast added afterwards, but that's all. Looking at it now, I'd probably remove some loose hairs, polish it a little bit more. But I guess the unprocessed look is part of this image now.

In my camera bag

I've since upgraded my body, so the Canon EOS 60D goes in my bag first! Then I have the 85mm f/1.8, the 50mm f/1.4 and the 35mm f/2.0 - While the 85mm is my favorite - fast and sharp, I often pick up the 35mm too because it's more flexible, smaller and lighter. Besides that, I have a 4-in-1 reflector, a Canon 430ex II flash and several memory cards. I've gone out before without one, it definitely ruins the fun! ;)

Feedback

Whether you want to take a self portrait or not, having a good relationship with your subject definitely helps. For close-up portraits, the face needs to speak, have emotion. If you want to try a self portrait, putting your camera on a tripod is a must! And using a remote is very helpful. If you feel awkward in front of the camera... that's normal and will get less with time. You really get to know yourself when taking self portraits, it's confronting but also very peaceful in a way. Take advantage of the fact that it's just you - no one else will get impatient or tired or get the timing wrong. Experiment and don't be afraid to get close to the camera.
