I really love this... I worked as a security officer for several years for a homeowners community. One night while traveling to work, I came upon two deer resting on lawns in another area. Awesome

Behind The Lens

Location

Some days I have to hike for five hours to get my shot, and some days it falls at my feet. This is why is always carry a camera. On this occasion, the two bucks were very relaxed and I had time to compose the shot and get as close as both parties were comfortable with.

Time

The bucks were sheltering from the heat of the afternoon sun towards the end of summer. That same shelter allowed me to shoot without any glare, but with plenty of light.

Lighting

Sometimes a shot like this will require the use of fill flash, but the available natural light was just about perfect.

Equipment

I rarely have the luxury of time to set up a tripod, so this was shot with my Canon 70D, handheld, with the 18-135 lens.

Inspiration

I often find myself cropping man-made element from my shots, but here was a picture of harmony between the natural world and a nearby town.

Editing

I try to make minimal tweaks to my shots where possible. Other than a little exposure finessing, I left it as-is.

In my camera bag

Dust is my enemy in the field, so I try to select a lens before setting out for the day. If I plan to use two lenses, I'll use a second body to avoid lens changes in a forest or on a mountain top.

Feedback

Be alert, try to learn a little about the habits of wildlife in order to anticipate their movements, and always, always carry a camera!
