It is very sad for me to report that the population of returning butterflies have dwindled down to less than 10% of normal. Be sure to visit before they are gone!

Wonderful shot!
I have heard that they come to California in their way, migrating from Mexico to Canada!

Lovely Monarch cluster. Great patterns. They come through in March and October in Del Rio most years. Very little this past march looking for them again this fall.

Love the way you've captured background light that replicates the shape of the Monarchs. Mesmerizing photograph.

Location
I was born and raised on the Monterey Peninsula. So, I always love to visit the Monarch Sanctuary each year when they come into town and everyone should experience it for themselves. Here's more info..... http://www.cityofpacificgrove.org/visiting/monarch-butterfly-sanctuaryTime
This photo was taken during mid day on a cloudy afternoon.Lighting
Lighting was diffused through the trees.Equipment
I use Canon 60D and 6D bodies. No flash or tripod. Just remember to use a long lens as you can only get so close to the trees...I was using a 100-400mm.Inspiration
I have always loved butterflies and seeing them when they are clustered together is quite special and with their population decreasing each year...it is very important for us as photographers to document these amazing creatures while they exist.Editing
Not much editing other than lighting some of the shadows and sharpening the edges. In my camera bag
3 Canon bodies, and 3 zoom lens with multiple filtersFeedback
Be sure to call ahead and ask about the returning population (which has been diminishing over the recent decades). Go during an overcast day and bring your longest lens available. They have set up barriers so that the butterflies are not disturbed, so please respect their natural habitat. Enjoy and have fun! Thanks for allowing me to share : )
