Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is taken on the air strip at Bowron Lake Resort - a famous lake of chains located in central British Columbia.

Time

It was August around 4pm, so the sun was starting to get lower in the sky and the ability to work with it as a back light was getting me excited!

Lighting

I placed the subjects so that the sun would be behind them, making nice rim light and causing the dress to glow! I had my assistant use a reflector to bounce the sunlight back onto the front of them to create a nice balance.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 50D and a 10-20mm wide angle lens

Inspiration

This was taken between the ceremony and reception, so were were limited for time, as is generally the case on a wedding day. The bride's dress was made of a very light fabric and the wind kept picking it up, which inspired me to try some shots of them dancing with the dress flowing. To get the angle I wanted with the sun positioned where it looked best, I had to lay on my stomach. As he spun her around, I army crawled closer and closer getting almost right under them with my wide angle to pull this shot off.

Editing

I used photoshop camera raw to balance out the shadows and highlights.

In my camera bag

Canon 5D mark iii, 50mm 1.4, 16-35mm wide angle lens, 75-300mm telephoto, 35mm 1.4, 100mm 2.8 macro, 85mm 1.8

Feedback

Be inspired by whatever is happening around you! If it wasn't for me watching the way the wind was picking up the dress and how the sunlight was making it glow, I may never have tried this shot. Let the wedding day tell the story, while you make the best of whatever is happening. If it's raining, go with it! If it's windy, work with that. If the sun shines, look for ways to use it in the shots. It's really about being in the moment and seeing the beauty no matter what the weather does that day.
