Out of the night, and out of the dark, It takes some time for the silica and chalk deposits to build the cone around a fumarole or a boiling water well.
Due to the instant cooling of the sipping water, minerals crystallize and form small deposit steps on the relatively flat cones, most often bluish and white as here.
This is a simmering water well at Hveravellir, Kjölur.
