These proud Sandhill Crane parents were strolling around our lake to show off their new chicks (also called colts). They are called colts because of their ability to run within 24 hours of hatching.
The chicks in this picture are only a few days old. They leave the nest within a day after hatching. Both parents feed young at first, but young gradually learn to feed themselves. Age at first flight about 65-75 days. Young remain with parents for 9-10 months.
