Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my living room... In order to get the dark background I used a deep black fabric hanging on a backdrop stand. That was a intended for a more mysterious environment and to make a strong interest focus on her lighted face.

Time

In order to have this color scheme we waited until it was dark enough to create the right environment. The goal was to have one light coming from the backlitted tablet.

Lighting

This lighting scheme is based on two hard flash lights. One coming straight to her face from her hand (later replaced by the tablet in post), and another flash light coming from her back and a bit cenital in order to light the hair and draw the silhouette. White balance was set to make the whole image very blue, but the orange gel set on the flashes create a better balance on the lighted surfaces (skin and hair).

Equipment

This shot was taken with a Nikon D800 camera and a Nikkor 35mm 1.4 lens. For the lighting I used two Elinchrom D-Lite 4 with a CTO in each one of them.

Inspiration

The model is an avid reader and loves finding new and exciting stories, usually science fiction. So I came up with this image to illustrate this characteristic of his personality.

Editing

Yes. I created two images: In the first one, she hold a flash light on her hand, and then this is replaced by the second image where she holds a digital book. then I blended both images trying to make it believable. Then there is a third image which is a stock image of the Milky Way.

In my camera bag

Recently I changed the whole equipment to Sony and Godox, since I am learning more staff about film. I normally have a Sony A7III with a Sony 35mm 1.4 lens attached to it. Other lenses I have in the bad are: Sony 50mm 1.8 and Sony 28-70mm 2.8 For lighting I use two Godox AD200pro.

Feedback

I always say to my student to focus on the story or the message they want to tell, and learn whatever is necessary to bring it to life. In this case is very important to learn masking in Photoshop (three images were blended in order to create this final result).
