Mute swans are partly descended from down-bred birds, but are also native. When these large birds fly over, there is a loud whistling sound from the wings. Non-breeding swans can often be seen on meadows, where they feast on grass. Both partners of a breeding pair are usually loyal to each other for a lifetime. If either bird dies, the other will stop eating and eventually will die as well.
