Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near a small fishing hamlet on the west coast of India, near Mumbai.

Time

This picture was taken around mid morning. What is striking is that the boats are resting on the muddy bottom because of the tide having gone out. The light was good that day and not too harsh.

Lighting

This picture was shot outdoors in natural light. Because of the time of day, the boats were evenly illuminated without any possibility of excessive shadows or highlights.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 5DS with a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens.

Inspiration

I find that aerial photography gives a very different perspective to a scene and it is one that is not often possible. Looking at objects and people from an overhead and more detached view further enhances the picture.

Editing

I usually keep post processing to a minimum. In this picture, there is some minor correction of shadows and highlights and the clarity has been tweaked up a bit.

In my camera bag

It depends on the type of shoot i am doing. For an aerial shoot, i keep equipment to a minimum and normally use only one body and a fast telephoto. For street photography, I again like to keep it light with one body and a 24-70mm lens. Its only on a wildlife photography trip that i carry the whole shebang...two bodies, two telephotos and one wide angle. And a macro. So yes, it takes some forethought and planning before stepping out with an aim to build a portfolio.

Feedback

The coast and beaches will always throw up something interesting so its a good idea to try some aerial photography there.
