20191001 – The story of the House Finch and a Juvenile Cardinal
Backyard Birding, Glendale, WI
I drove through Brown Deer Park and even stopped briefly, but there was not much to see. So, I went home. With Camera in hand, I went to the back yard and started watching the birds. It was not long, maybe five minutes, and the birds, who were startled when I arrived and flew away, returned. I saw a number of House Finch land on the feeder, and even a few goldfinches, before a Juvenile Cardinal stopped by. The Juvenile Cardinal watched the House Finch for a bit and then opened its beak as it would for its parents when looking for food. The House Finch, obviously a parent, without hesitation picked up a seed and gave it to the Juvenile Cardinal. The House finch then picked up another seed, before flying off leaving the Cardinal a bit lost.
I have seen one bird species caring for another in the absence of its parents, but I have never witnessed something like this. I know the parents for the Cardinal were nearby.
