As I was walking back to the parking lot, the sand fence was casting a fascinating blend of images its entire length. Something about the broken section seemed to go along with winter finally breaking up and giving way to spring.

Location
This photo was taken in Holland, Michigan at the Holland State Park beach.Time
The photo was taken in late afternoon, about 4:30 pm, as I was walking back to my car. I would have completely missed the opportunity to create this image if I'd followed the sidewalk path a ways ahead of me, but as I turned to look up toward the parking lot, I saw this line of fascinating images created by the somewhat-dilapidated snow fence on the beach.Lighting
The lighting was all ambient, and with just a touch of golden hour tones starting to creep in to color the sand. The late afternoon sun created these interesting shadows.Equipment
I created the shot in Manual mode with my Canon 80D, using my 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM zoom lens, set at 10mm. The aperture was set at f/16, with ISO400 and 1/400s exposure.Inspiration
As I mentioned before, just seeing the contrasting shapes and shadows created by the slats in the snow fence made the decision for me. I couldn't walk past these amazing shadows without capturing them!Editing
I did very little post-process, using Luminar to bring the shadows down a bit, and to bring out the highlights and mid-tones a bit more. I also warmed up the color just a touch to bring out that 'golden hour' feel.In my camera bag
I typically carry my Canon 80D with five lenses (50mm f/1.8, 10-18mm wide angle zoom, 18-55mm zoom, and 55-250mm zoom, 100mm macro prime lens). I also have my Haida M10 pro filter holder with a 10-stop ND and 3-stop GND filter. Of course, I always have my standard accessories like spare batteries, lens hoods, memory cards, etc., and I carry a Godox V860-II speedlight with MagMod Sphere & MagBeam flash modifiers.Feedback
My advice is always simple...soak up everything about where you are, and feel the story that starts to reveal itself about your subject and your surroundings. I'm always amazed that eventually a compelling story begins to emerge, and my job then becomes how best to capture that story. Sometimes that's easy to do, sometimes it's damn hard, and sometimes I'm not able to do it at all. It's those times that I just enjoy the story and the moment, and then later it drives me to get better at my craft so in the future I can perhaps succeed.
