Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the hills of Börzsöny, Hungary.

Time

The photo was taken at noon time, which is usually not the best to shoot good photos - but this tiny flower is one of the first flowers that grows after the snow melts, therefore the photo was taken in the early spring, the lights were good at the mid of the day.

Lighting

Only natural light in a forest under big trees. The background bokeh is a tiny creek.

Equipment

The camera is a Nikon D750 body, just bough before this trip - the photo is the 277. expo in the body. The lens was a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 on f4.0 aperture, 165mm focal length and manual focus mode. Did not use the tripod, the camera was in my hand.

Inspiration

At this place where the photo was taken, there is a meadow of these small flowers - many of them grows at a given area. I have been there in the previous years also, but had no luck with the weather before. Planned to have this shot this year.

Editing

Yes, a basic post-processing using Lightroom. Standard settings, contrast curve, sharpening only.

In my camera bag

I have only the D750 body at the moment, so this is for sure the first item in the bag. The lens i put into the bag is the Tamron 70-200 f2.8, a Nikon 20mm/f2.8, again a Nikon but 50mm/f1.8 (the one before the "D" or "G" series), and i have a Helios lens from the series that was made for Nikon mount, the 81H 50/2. After this, a small Godox flash goes into a pocket, and finally a Manfrotto Element tripod.

Feedback

I think the most important is that you need to know when and where such flowers grow - and you need to find and reach the location. To achieve all these, you need to go hiking a lot in the nature. The best is if you can find and join a group of people with the same interests. Try to isolate one flower with clear background. A small "gardening" around your subject is usually reasonable, but be careful not to remove any protected flower. You will have to lay yourself down, probably into mud, leaves, wet grass - be prepared with proper clothes. Focusing is a key (as usually in photography..) but have to be really very careful this case because of shallow depth. Use your lens from f1.8 up to f4 aperture, depending on focal length.
