Behind The Lens
Location
This was taken in Whitby, North Yorkshire, UK. We go several times a year as we have family nearby.Time
12:45 in February 2019. It was a very cold and overcast winters day. There was no one else around due to the weather. My wife was with me but did not venture as far as this on the pier.Lighting
The sky was heavily overcast but with some good structure to the clouds. The light was coming from behind the lens which gave some texture to boards of the pier. There were some bright streaks in the clouds and this helped to illuminate the pier itself.Equipment
Actually because on the weather, I didn’t have my camera with me, it was in the car, so I took the photo with my mobile phone. A Oneplus Five, Android phone.Inspiration
I’ve taken this shot several times before and got decent photos but on this occasion with the absence of people and the light from behind the lens, together with the sky, made it a shot not to miss. And so it proved.Editing
Yes, converted it to black and white as that was how I envisaged it.In my camera bag
Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark ii with 12-100 f4 PRO lens. Or Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark ii with 14-42 kit lens (if I’m travelling light). I also have a 300mm f4 PRO lens. If I am taking moving subjects such a Steam Trains or other transport, I prefer to use my Sony A7Riii with a 24-105mm f4 G lens which is a full frame mirrorless camera and faster focusing than my Olympus. I don’t carry all my equipment, it depends on what I particularly want to take on that occasion. The Olympus gear is so much lighter than my old Nikon gear.Feedback
No matter how many times you visit a location, the lighting or angle of view can be different every time. I always try to carry a camera. If I’m travelling light I usually have my Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark ii with takes excellent photos comparable with my larger Olympus but it’s not weathersealed. On this occasion, I used the camera on my phone and look at the photo it achieved.
