Behind The Lens

Location

This peacock picture was taken in a neighbourhood in Dallas, Texas near Flagpole Hill.

Time

The time of day was mid afternoon around 2:30.

Lighting

The day was a typical bright sunny day in Texas. The neighborhood has many large oak trees providing shady relief for the dozen or more peacocks that roam the neighborhood.

Equipment

Nikon D800 with a hand held Nikon 70-200mm lens

Inspiration

There were several males trying to court a couple of female peacocks. This one would always wait for the other males to show off then he would walk towards the females and ruffle his feathers into this perfectly upright display shaking it while he impressed the hens. While he was doing his dance the hens would flock around him and the younger males would back down.

Editing

Post processing we clarification, saturation and a pass through Luminar to apply an HDR effect. Highlight and shadow adjustment to provide a more balanced image.

In my camera bag

Nikon D800 Nikon 24-70 mm and 70-200 mm Polarising filter Extra battery And several CF cards 4mg, 8 mg, 16mg and 32mg.

Feedback

On an image like this I would suggest the one have patience. Shoot from a vehicle or other spot we’re your not a destraction to your subject and take lots of images as things can happen fast. Use available light instead of a flash or other artificial light source. Natural light will illuminate your subject in the days light providing a natural look to the overall image. Use a larger zoom lens as the subjects tend to move around a lot. In the end your patience will be rewarded when your subjects feel they are alone and you are not a threat, but an observer!
